Safety Programs

Our Safety Programs

Keeping our people safe is our top priority. To do that, we take a multi-faceted approach to safety.

Safety is fundamental to our operation and is embedded in our culture. Our core values, known as the Nyrstar Way, reinforces our safety culture through:

  • Preventing Harm
  • Being Open and Honest
  • Keeping our Word
  • Being Considerate
  • Working Together

Whilst safety is the responsbility of everyone on site, we also have a fully committed Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Team that comprises a number of specialists who support the site. We are committed in providing people a safe place to work and the site is fully certified to AS 4801: 2001.

Our Safety Standards

The site aims to achieve best practice in safety and health to deliver sustainable performance. We operate under a number of global safety and health standards developed by the Nyrstar Group. The suite of standards apply to all employees and contractors and focus on critical risk areas such as:

  • Working at Heights
  • Confined Space
  • Biological Monitoring
  • Isolation of Energy Sources
  • Electrical Safety
  • Vehicle and Pedestrians
  • Molten and Hot Materials

Compliance to standards are audited regularly as are our general safety systems.

Safe Work at the Zinc Works

The Safety Team implement policies and procedures while delivering safety projects to the site which will continually improve our performance.  We invest heavily in promoting behavioral safety through undertaking Safety Interactions, undertaking daily Safety Pre Start Huddles and training our people in being safety leaders. Intervention on unsafe acts and conditions is encouraged and all employees and contractors are encouraged to stop a job and see a supervisor if they feel unsafe.

We have a fully functioning Occupational Health and Safety(OHS) Committee that has representation from all Operating and Maintenance areas on-site and also involves key members of the sites Management Team. The OHS Committee works closely with the Safety Team and is instrumental in delivering site safety improvement projects.

There are a number of initiatives that focus on ensuring our employees and contractors are safe such as:

  • Eliminating manual handling
  • Reducing Vehicle and Pedestrian Interfaces
  • Undertaking Activity Audits and Principles of Safety Observations on High Risk Tasks
  • Improving housekeeping

Health and Hygeine at Nyrstar Hobart

The health of our employees and contractors is also important. We have a drug and alcohol policy to ensure that people present to work in a fit state and are not putting themselves, or others at risk. Random and blanket testing for drugs and alcohol is undertaken, as is it can be after a serious accident or injury.

We have three main elements to occupational hygiene at the zinc works:

  • Air monitoring to measure heavy metal dust, respirable dust, gases, fibers and mist
  • Radiation, noise and lighting monitoring
  • Biological monitoring of lead and cadmium of employees and contractors. We also test for other metals such as mercury depending on risk of exposure.

To support our employee health program we have an Occupational Physician and Nurse who provide specialist advice and undertake health assessments.

Well Being is also critical to our site. Well Being programs are offered to employees, their families and contractors who work at the Zinc Works. Some of the Well Being initiatives that we promote include:

  • Health Monitoring (Cholesterol)
  • Get Fit Clinics
  • Quit Smoking Initiatives
  • Diabetes and Heart Condition Clinics
  • Site Newsletters
  • Corporate entries in sporting events
