Grants, sponsorships and partnerships

Nyrstar understands that a little support can go a long way.

Community grants

The Nyrstar Hobart zinc smelter is a major contributor to the Tasmanian economy and one of the State’s major employers.  And while we move in international markets, we’re committed to supporting our local community because it’s our community, too. It’s where we’ve worked, lived and brought up our families since we first began operating in 1917.

We’re very pleased to offer a number of small grants (up to $3,000 each) to help your organisation or group make a difference.

Our current grant round is now open, and closes at midnight on Friday 29 November 2019. The application guidelines and application form are available here:

Nyrstar Hobart Smelter Study Grant 2019

In 2018 we offered the inaugural Nyrstar Hobart Smelter Study Grant to an immediate family member of a current employee to assist them cover costs associated with their studies. In order to be eligible, the individual needed to be in their third year of study at an Australian University in a course that was relevant to our operations, eg. engineering, commerce, arts, law.

The 2018 grant was awarded to Kyran Stanton, son of Reliability Officer Andrew Stanton. Kyran is completing a five-year combined Bachelor of Science (majoring in Chemistry) and Bachelor of Engineering (majoring in computer systems engineering) through the University of Tasmania.

In 2019 the grant was awarded to University of Tasmania medicine student, Cody Felmingham.

The grant has now been extended to the immediate family members of former as well as current employees and it applies to a student in any year of their studies. We’ll advertise the 2020 round early in the new year.

Moonah Taste of the World The Moonah Taste of the World Festival is a celebration through food and musical performances and children’s activities of the rich cultural diversity of Glenorchy City and southern Tasmania.  Staged in the vibrant suburb of Moonah, a busy hub of diverse eateries and food suppliers, the event features a mouth-watering selection of dishes and treats from around the globe at very reasonable prices. Nyrstar Hobart is a proud, longstanding supporter of the Festival, which will celebrate its ninth edition in 2019.

Nyrstar has partnered with Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to create the first Seabird Rehabilitation facility in Tasmania.  The enclosure features specialised infrastructure including a pool, allowing the Sanctuary to care for sick and injured seabirds.  Nyrstar has a very strong focus on proactive environmental solutions, which have seen significant improvements to protecting the Derwent Estuary and the sealife it houses.  Nyrstar is proud to support Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in its endeavors to protect Tasmania’s precious seabirds.
